tonari (隣) — literally neighbor or beside in Japanese.

every intervention, from wall to window to material detail, is carefully considered in relation to context, adjacency, and history.

our architecture stands alongside the existing fabric, attentive, respectful, and in open dialogue with the people, places, and life around it.

studio tonari was founded by architect and carpenter Johannes Lauridsen and conceptual designer Louise Skafte, with a shared vision of creating architecture that responds to context, heritage, and community, drawing inspiration from the culture, traditions, and architecture of Japan.

Influenced by Japanese principles and a deep respect for the natural and built environment, the studio approaches every project as a dialogue with materials, landscape, and people. Each intervention considers the history of a place, the qualities of its materials, and the life that surrounds it.

The studio specialises in private residences, restoration, and sustainable building projects. Every project is carefully tailored to site-specific conditions, where spatial composition, natural light, and materiality work together to honor both past and present.

At Studio Tonari, we aim to create spaces that foster calm, harmony, and a sense of belonging. Our design process is guided by attentiveness, respect, and quiet observation, producing architecture that feels anchored in its context, connected to its community, and alive with time.
